Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.
Islam uses a lunar calendar?that is, each month begins
with the sighting of the new moon. In 2004 Ramadan will
begin on Oct. 15. For more than a billion Muslims around
the world Ramadan is a "month of blessing" marked by
prayer, fasting, and charity. Muslims fast during the
daylight hours and in the evening eat small meals and
visit with friends and family. It is a time of worship
and contemplation. A time to strengthen family and
community ties. |
